Challenge
On top of the standard challenges that go along with a service like Victory—owning up to the problem, holding yourself accountable to change, and trusting others with a very personal secret—the primary challenge addressed by Victory was the need for real-time accountability in combating pornography addiction. Traditional methods, reliant on delayed reporting, allowed for prolonged periods of addiction without immediate consequences. Additionally, educating allies to provide effective support posed another hurdle. Covenant Eyes sought to address these challenges by developing a solution that provided instant accountability and comprehensive education, while also crafting a brand identity that reflected empathy and hope.
We need community to succeed in this fight and this app equips us to easily look out for each other. This is a big step forward for phone accountability.

Solution
Victory emerged as an always-on accountability platform that empowers users and allies with instant access to device activity and notifications, fostering timely intervention and support. To enhance user experience, I led the development of a user-centric design, incorporating elements such as wireframes and prototypes based on customer personas. The application also features a robust library of education and training content, seamlessly integrated into the app. Furthermore, I spearheaded the creation of a vibrant brand identity, encompassing visual design, branding elements, and engaging illustrations, to inspire a sense of hope and camaraderie.
The app also aimed to address the needs of the accountability partner—or ally, as Covenant Eyes calls them. Through extensive research we distilled three main questions allies have when trying to best help the service user, which are, "Should I be concerned? What happened? What do I do now?". Victory was built specifically to give allies the power to answer these questions themselves. One example is the Victory summary module that gives a clear answer to these three questions in a single easily accessible location.
But this was a big shift for a Covenant Eyes’ notoriously mature customer base—at the time the average customer subscription time was nearly 36 months. We were asking them to completely readjust to a brand new way of living accountable. Faced with some initial pushback, and even the loss of some of those longterm accounts, it felt tenuous as the design lead on the project, but the executive team believed in our vision and gave their full support. One measure that I contributed to—through ideation and visualizations—to help smooth the transition was a “fireside chat” series of publicly streamed broadcasts where we explained the reasons behind the shift and took audience questions to assuage their doubts. This series, as well as some other executive-led initiatives, resulted in a smooth rollout and great reception by a new wave of customers that appreciated a modernized, improved accountability.
Process Towards Perseverance
From inception to launch, our team embarked on a comprehensive journey to bring Victory to life. We began by crafting personas from scratch, leveraging insights from customer interviews and quantitative survey data. These personas served as the foundation for our design decisions, providing invaluable guidance as we shaped the wireframes for the application. Through iterative prototyping and observational user testing, we refined our designs, ensuring that they were intuitive and user-friendly.
Simultaneously, we compiled two decades' worth of accountability knowledge into the Victory library, enriching the app with a wealth of educational resources and training content. This content was meticulously curated to foster empathy and support, empowering allies to provide effective assistance to those struggling with pornography addiction.
As we approached launch, we developed a rollout strategy in collaboration with our executive team. This strategy included a dual-availability period, during which customers could familiarize themselves with the changes introduced by Victory. This approach facilitated a smooth transition for our users and exceeded our expectations in terms of satisfaction and adoption rates.
Throughout the process, my role as the UX Design lead involved guiding the architectural and branding aspects of Victory. From developing wireframes to crafting the brand guide, engaging illustrations, and UX component styling, I ensured that every element of the application resonated with the friendliness, empathy, and hope embodied by the Victory brand. Together, our efforts culminated in the successful launch of Victory, marking a significant milestone for Covenant Eyes and setting a new standard in the industry.

Research Deep-Dive: Victory Summary Module
As stated earlier in the case study, a big focus of the Victory app was on improving the Ally experience. Research showed that strong allies were directly correlated with long-term success for our users. One of the major pieces that Victory implemented was a comprehensive summary module that would quickly and concisely answer an allies most important questions. Through two studies, Katie Oeschger (my UX research partner) and I sought to validate the effectiveness of the innovative summary module concept.
Study 1: Unveiling Design Concepts
In the initial study, 28 Covenant Eyes allies participated in unmoderated testing sessions on the UserTesting.com platform. Participants were presented with three distinct app summary report design concepts: Design Concept 1, Design Concept 2, and a control group design (consisting of the existing report design). The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy and user acceptance of the two new report summary designs in assisting allies to accurately and efficiently assess the recent online activity of their heroes (what Covenant Eyes call their users).
Key Findings
1. Design Concept 2 outperforms the current email report:
-
Participants using Design Concept 2 exhibited 100% accuracy in evaluating clean reports
-
Design Concept 2 demonstrated a 14.6% increase in ease of use compared to the control design
-
Users reported an 11.6% boost in confidence (versus control) in their interpretation of the report with Design Concept 2
2. The summary module helps allies accomplish their goals:
-
The introduction of summary module garnered significant praise from participants, with 24% highlighting it as the most important feature
-
Users appreciated the summary's ability to provide a quick overview, facilitating confident decision-making
-
Control group feedback echoed the desire for clearer summaries, validating the need for enhanced reporting features
Study Implications
The study findings underscored the demand for improved report summary design, emphasizing the importance of clarity and efficiency in aiding ally decision-making. Insights gleaned from user feedback informed iterative design refinements, aiming to enhance user-friendliness and overall effectiveness.
Study 2: Validating Design Iterations
Based on findings from study 1, two new iterations of design concept 2 were made. Katie and I conducted a follow-up survey study to further validate the efficacy of Design Concept 2 and expand upon earlier findings. The survey engaged 1,295 current allies, randomly assigned to test one of two in-progress design concepts featuring the new summary module.
Key Findings
1. High Accuracy and Ease of Use:
-
Approximately 70% of survey respondents relied solely on the summary report to assess hero activity, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of ~90%.
-
The majority of participants rated both design concepts highly for ease of use, with scores indicating a seamless user experience.
2. User Preference and Opt-In Intent:
-
Over 80% of users expressed willingness to opt into the new design concepts, citing confidence and ease of use as key factors.
-
Qualitative feedback highlighted the visual appeal and functionality of the summary module, with users praising its clarity and efficiency.
Conclusions from the studies
The culmination of both studies reaffirmed the critical role of the summary module in empowering allies to make informed decisions swiftly and accurately. By addressing user preferences and optimizing design elements, Victory has positioned itself to deliver a more intuitive and effective accountability solution, enhancing support for individuals on their journey towards recovery.
